Release of ESA CCI SM v03.3 - one more year of global soil moisture

The ESA CCI Soil Moisture team is pleased to announce the update of the most comprehensive global time series of satellite based soil moisture.

ESA CCI SM v03.3 comprises the three well-known active, passive and combined satellite soil moisture datasets. This latest release has seen an extension of the dataset by one calendar year up to 31-12-2016 compared to the previous version v03.2.

ESA Space for Our Climate features nearly 4 decades of soil moisture data availability

A new ESA article features that a new, long-term and global dataset of soil moisture measurements from space has been released to help us better understand the water cycle and climate, monitor agriculture and manage our water resources. See a video of daily global soil moisture and read more here.

The image shows soil moisture anomalies in the United States and the Gulf of Mexico for the last 10 days of August 2017. Blue depicts areas with higher soil moisture than usual, while brown shows lower soil moisture than usual for this time of the year. The image clearly shows the impact of Hurricane Harvey in southern Texas. Read more »

Austrian TV ORF interview on remote sensing, soil moisture and disaster control

During last week's soil moisture workshops which were held at and organized by GEO at TU Wien, the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF) interviewed Susanne Mecklenburg (ESA), Rolf Reichle (NASA) and Wouter Dorigo (TU Wien) on the possibilities remote sensing data of soil moisture offers for disaster control. Two soil moisture workshops brought 110 scientists from 21 nations to Vienna

About 110 scientists from 21 nations participated to the ESA CCI Soil Moisture user workshop and the Soil Moisture Validation and Application Workshop ( held in Vienna from 18th to 20th September 2017. The aim was to share latest scientific insights in the retrieval, validation, and use of satellite-derived soil moisture.

Global soil moisture conditions featured in "BAMS State of the Climate in 2016"

The yearly returning authoritative summary of the global climate, led by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, has been published in the State of the Climate 2016 Report of the American Meteorological Society. The report features a global overview of recent and historical variations of climatological variables, including soil moisture from the ESA CCI soil moisture dataset. Page 30-32 of the report highlight the global soil moisture conditions in 2016 with respect to their historical context. The ESA CCI soil moisture data show a strong similarity with related terrestrial water cycle components such as terrestrial water storage, precipitation, the self-calibrating PDSI, and terrestrial evaporation.
