Global soil moisture conditions featured in "BAMS State of the Climate in 2016"

The yearly returning authoritative summary of the global climate, led by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, has been published in the State of the Climate 2016 Report of the American Meteorological Society. The report features a global overview of recent and historical variations of climatological variables, including soil moisture from the ESA CCI soil moisture dataset. Page 30-32 of the report highlight the global soil moisture conditions in 2016 with respect to their historical context. The ESA CCI soil moisture data show a strong similarity with related terrestrial water cycle components such as terrestrial water storage, precipitation, the self-calibrating PDSI, and terrestrial evaporation.
Worldwide, the report has received a strong media attention, for example at:
- CNN (USA)
- The Guardian (UK)
- BBC (UK)
- USA TODAY
- Der Spiegel (Germany)
- ORF (Austria)
- De Morgen (Belgium)
